In Argentina and Uruguay, the term orquesta típica is associated with tango music. The orquesta típica usually comprises a string section (three or four violins, and sometimes viola and cello), three or more bandoneons, and a rhythm section (piano and double bass). An orquesta típica is an expanded version of a sexteto típico, which includes 2 bandoneons, 2 violins, double bass and piano.

Anton and his Orchestra broadcasting from the Camden Theatre, London

Anton and his orchestra were regularly featured on the BBC Light Programme and Home Service for more than two decades. Anton (real name Arthur Sweeting) was working in theatres in the 1930s when he was advised to find himself a more imposing name - so Anton he became!
During the latter half of the thirties he was conductor of the Paramount Theatre orchestra in London's Tottenham Court Road, from where the orchestra gave weekly broadcasts as well as making many records for HMV, often accompanied by Al Bollington on the cinema organ. The orchestra consisted of strings, woodwind, accordion, piano and percussion and was almost a who's who of the light music profession as it consisted of top session players.

Not Much Info On Mr Sydney Colthman except this Photo  !
                                                           British Tenor vocalist, c. 1910-1930s.

Albert Sandler was born Abraham Sandler in London on 2 June 1906. Given his first violin on his eleventh birthday, he was initially taught by his older brother. He started playing in a local cinema orchestra at age 12, spent two years at the Guildhall School of Music and eventually became leader of the orchestra at the Trocadero and later the Grand Hotel, Eastbourne.
The Grand Hotel was the site of his first radio broadcast in 1925. He was eventually to make more than 1,100 broadcasts. He also made many recordings and concert appearances. Light music was always his specialty.
Later in his career, starting in 1943, Sandler led the Palm Court Orchestra, which he'd organized at the request of the BBC. It was with this orchestra that he inaugurated the BBC's Grand Hotel broadcasts, which became one of the most popular programs on the radio network during the postwar era.

Benjamin Baruch Ambrose (11 September 1896 – 11 June 1971), known professionally as Ambrose or Bert Ambrose, was an English bandleader and violinist. Ambrose became the leader of a highly acclaimed British dance band, Bert Ambrose & His Orchestra, in the 1930s.
In 1922, Ambrose was engaged by the Embassy Club to form a seven-piece band. He stayed at the Embassy for two years, before walking out on his employer to take up a much more lucrative job at the Clover Gardens in New York.
After a year there, besieged by continual pleas to return from his ex-employer in London, in 1925 he was finally persuaded to go back by a cable from the Prince of Wales: "The Embassy needs you. Come back—Edward".
This time Ambrose stayed at the Embassy Club until 1927.
His major discovery in the years leading up to the war was the singer Vera Lynn, who sang with his band from 1937 to 1940 and, during the war, became known as the "Forces' Sweetheart". Other singers with the Ambrose band included Sam Browne, Elsie Carlisle, Denny Dennis, who recorded a number of duets with Vera Lynn, Max Bacon (also the band's drummer), Evelyn Dall and Anne Shelton.

William Thomas, a pseudonym for tenor Thomas Jackson. appears to have been quite prolific in Great Britain in the 1910s and 1920s.

Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943) was an American jazz pianist, organist, composer, violinist, singer, and comedic entertainer. His innovations in the Harlem stride style laid much of the basis for modern jazz piano. His best-known compositions, "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose", were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1984 and 1999.

The Sylvians was a short-lived band, based at the Savoy Hotel, London, in 1926 and 1927. It was one of a number of dance bands at that time which did not include a brass section, in order to give it a quieter, more subtle sound to that of the larger bands. Brass instruments were added for the purpose of making gramophone records.

"The Happy Wanderer" is a popular song. The original text was written by Florenz Friedrich Sigismund (1791–1877).
The present tune was composed by Friedrich-Wilhelm Möller shortly after World War II. The work is often mistaken for a German folk song, but it is an original composition. Möller's sister Edith conducted a small amateur children's and youth choir in the district of Schaumburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany, internationally named Obernkirchen Children's Choir, in Germany named Schaumburger Märchensänger. She adapted Sigismund's words for her choir.
In 1953, a BBC radio broadcast of the choir's winning performance at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod turned the song into an instant hit. On January 22, 1954, the song entered the UK singles chart and stayed on the chart—only a Top 12 at the time—for 26 non-consecutive weeks, peaking at Number 2 (for five consecutive weeks). The amateur choir, many of whose original members were war orphans, turned into an international phenomenon in the following years. The group performed on many international tours under the name Obernkirchen Children's Choir and recorded several albums. They made two appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show (November 29, 1964, and December 11, 1966).

Norman MacPhail Blair (14 June 1896 – 5 October 1975), who most often used the pseudonym Maurice Elwin in his professional work, was a British dance band singer and songwriter who was popular between the First and Second World Wars. He used over 60 different pseudonyms, both as a singer and composer, including John Curtis, Maurice Kelvin, Donald O'Keefe, Guy Victor, and Max Wynn, as well as sometimes using the name Norman Blair.
He made his first known recording, as Maurice Elwin, in 1916, though it was not issued at the time, in 1926 he was singing and recording, notably with the Gramophone Company and on the Parlophone label. He recorded many solo performances and duets, as well as uncredited vocals on dance band records, simply noted anonymously as "vocal refrain".
A baritone singer, Elwin was one of the most prolific British recording artists of the era, recording some 2,000 tracks. His style was said to be "understated and subtle", relatively unemotional and with precise diction. Among the many bands with whom he recorded in the 1920s and early 1930s were those of Bert Firman and Arthur Lally. These were regarded at the time as "hot" bands, though Elwin also recorded with more orchestral ensembles, notably the Savoy Orpheans led by Carroll Gibbons in the early 1930s. By 1936, he was said to receive the highest salary ever paid to a British dance band singer.

Buddy Clark (born Samuel Goldberg, July 26, 1912 – October 1, 1949) was an American popular singer of the Big Band era. He had some success in the 1930s, but his career truly blossomed in the late 1940s, after his return from service in World War II, and he became one of the nation's top crooners. He died in a plane crash in 1949.
In 1949 Clark opened the year with "Powder Your Face With Sunshine" again a duet with Doris Day on a top 15 seller and two more that were top 25 tunes - "I Love You So Much It Hurts" with Earl Hagen's band on and "It's A Big Wide Wonderful World" from the Broadway show "All In Fun" with Mitchell Ayres on In the spring of 1949 Clark recorded another duet, this time with Dinah Shore on the tune "Baby It's Cold Outside" from the film "Neptunes Daughter" on It was another huge hit remaining a top seller for five months and topping out at number four on the national charts. The Casino Orchestra was the House Orchestra in the Columbia studios in London from 1910 to 1918.

The Royal Opera House (ROH) is an opera house and major performing arts venue in Covent Garden, central London. The large building is often referred to as simply Covent Garden, after a previous use of the site. It is the home of The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. The first theatre on the site, the Theatre Royal (1732), served primarily as a playhouse for the first hundred years of its history.
From 1934 to 1936, Geoffrey Toye was managing director, working alongside the Artistic Director, Sir Thomas Beecham.
The Royal Opera House reopened on 20 February 1946 with a performance of The Sleeping Beauty in an extravagant new production designed by Oliver Messel. Webster, with his music director Karl Rankl, immediately began to build a resident company. In December 1946, they shared their first production, Purcell's The Fairy-Queen, with the ballet company. On 14 January 1947, the Covent Garden Opera Company gave its first performance of Bizet's Carmen.

Phil Ohman (October 7, 1896 – August 8, 1954) was an American film composer and pianist. He is remembered as being one half of one of the pre-eminent piano duos in the 1922-1932, paired with Victor Arden. They were the pit pianists in many of George Gershwin's musicals, and recorded hundreds of piano rolls and records. Starting in mid 1927, just as they signed to Victor Records, they developed a large studio orchestra specializing in Broadway show songs that became quite popular. These particular records employed a rather large, brassy powerful sound (it is not known who they used as arranger), always with a space for a twin piano duet section.
Victor Arden was the stage name for an American pianist named Lewis John Fuiks (8 March 1893 — 31 July 1962) who was best known as the piano duo partner of and co-orchestra leader with Phil Ohman from 1922 to 1932. He was the pianist in the All-Star Trio, who made several hits for Victor Records between 1919 and 1921.

Reginald Herbert Dixon, MBE, ARCM (16 October 1904 – 9 May 1985) was an English theatre organist who was primarily known for his position as organist at the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool, a position he held from March 1930 until March 1970. He made and sold more recordings than any other organist before him, or since. He was in high demand throughout the 1930s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s. During his fifty-year career he was one of the top-selling artists, his prolific output ranking alongside that of Victor Silvester and Bing Crosby.
Between 1932 and 1958, Reginald Dixon released some 296 records on 78rpm discs.

The Vipers Skiffle Group – later known simply as The Vipers – were one of the leading British groups during the skiffle period of the mid to late 1950s, and were important in the careers of radio and television presenter Wally Whyton, coffee bar manager Johnny Martyn, wire salesman Jean Van den Bosch, instrument repairer Tony Tolhurst, journalist John Pilgrim, record producer George Martin, and several members of The Shadows. The group formed in the spring of 1956 in central London, originally as a trio of singer-guitarists comprising Whyton, Johnny Martyn (born John Martyn Booker, 1934–2007), and Jean Van den Bosch, who was replaced in 1958 by Freddy Lloyd. Later that summer they added a rhythm section, Tony Tolhurst (bass) and John Pilgrim (washboard), and took up residency at the renowned Soho music venue, the 2i's Coffee Bar. There, they sometimes jammed with jazz musician Mike Pratt and singer Tommy Hicks, later known as Tommy Steele. In September 1956 they were offered an audition with George Martin at Parlophone Records, and won a recording contract.
Their second single, "Don't You Rock Me Daddy-O", produced by Martin, reached number 10 in the UK Singles Chart in early 1957.

Doris Arnold was born on November 4, 1904 in Wimbledon, Surrey, England, UK. She is known for The Kentucky Minstrels (1948), Looking In (1933) and Sunshine Ahead (1936).
The Kentucky Minstrels was a popular series of BBC radio programmes broadcast regularly in Britain between 1933 and 1950. Despite the fact that the show could only be heard and not seen, it retained the conventional format of minstrel shows, with a "white" compere or "Interlocutor", and "black" comedy "end men" and entertainers.
The popularity of the show led to  a film in 1934, Kentucky Minstrels.

Yehudi Menuhin, Baron Menuhin, (22 April 1916 – 12 March 1999) was an American-born violinist and conductor who spent most of his performing career in Britain. He is widely considered one of the great violinists of the 20th century. He played the Soil Stradivarius, considered one of the finest violins made by Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari.
Menuhin worked with famous jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli in the 1970s on Jalousie, an album of 1930s classics led by duetting violins backed by the Alan Claire Trio.
His recording contract with EMI lasted almost 70 years and is the longest in the history of the music industry. He made his first recording at age 13 in November 1929, and his last in 1999, when he was nearly 83 years old. He recorded over 300 works for EMI, both as a violinist and as a conductor.
Stella Tanner was born in 1925 and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). She left her focus on dramatic acting to form the Tanner Sisters with her sister, Frances Tanner. Together, the Tanner Sisters made hundreds of appearances on British radio and television during the 1950s, even performing alongside Buddy Holly in March 1958. The Tanner Sisters often performed with the Hedley Ward Trio, first appearing with them on the Educating Archie radio show from 1950 to 1952.

Hedley Ward was one of the foremost British bandleaders of the 30s, 40s and 50s, and his Trio featured in many radio and television broadcasts, and are still to be heard on archive programmes. The Trio was made up of Jack Mckechnie, guitar; Derek Franklin Bass; Bob Carter, Piano. Derek Franklin was also known as the second husband of actress Beryl Reid.
